When the bedroom is dark, cool, quiet and free from clutter, what else could be keeping you up at night? If your personal relationships are good, and you’re financially okay, the reason for your random swirling thoughts could be down to an old mattress. “One of the simplest solutions for a good night’s sleep is a comfortable mattress,” notes The Sleep Foundation.

The signs of a bad mattress are not always obvious, so what should you look out for?

One visible sign is when the mattress is sagging, which leads to uneven spinal support.

“Almost all mattresses start to sag over time as a result of supporting the weight of your body, night after night,” the Sleep Foundation adds.

Poor sleep quality can have an effect on your physical and mental health.

Waking up in the mornings with aches and pain can be telling; it could indicate that the comfort layers within the mattress are breaking down.

While a good night’s sleep should leave you feeling refreshed in the morning, a bad mattress won’t let this happen, no matter how many hours you get in.

Other signs of a bad mattress can also lead to:

  • Waking up multiple times during the night
  • Taking longer than usual to fall asleep.

Worn mattresses, over time, can collect pet dander, mildew, mould, and other allergens.

If you are prone to allergies, it could be signs of an allergic reaction that is keeping you awake.

Symptoms of an allergy, according to the NHS, include:

  • Sneezing and an itchy, runny or blocked nose
  • Itchy, red, watering eyes
  • Wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and a cough
  • A raised, itchy, red rash
  • Swollen lips, tongue, eyes or face
  • Tummy pain, feeling sick, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Dry, red and cracked skin.

You might just be able to tell if your mattress is uncomfortable and, if so, it’s time for a new one.

Without adequate sleep at night, the body is less able to repair damaged tissues and remove toxins.

The Sleep Foundation adds: “Studies have connected poor sleep to memory and concentration problems, weakened immune system functioning, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.”

High blood pressure and cardiovascular disease, for example, could shorten your life.

How long do mattresses last?

While a mattress can last for up to 10 years, there are many factors that could mean you need to change it much sooner.

“The quality and materials of a mattress significantly impact how it performs,” The Sleep Foundation states.

However, as a mattress tends to wear out over time, it may be difficult to notice the exact moment when its structure is breaking down.

People might become accustomed to how their mattress feels, not realising how bad the situation is.

Yet, if you are struggling to sleep, and your mattress is either of low quality or old, that could be the issue.
