7 Foods That Will Give You Life During Your Next Hangover

With the upcoming onslaught of holiday parties, there’s a chance you’ll experiencing the dreaded hangover at some point. Who among us hasn’t thrown back one too many glasses of champagne while toasting the new year?

But while some may swear that coffee cures all hangover woes, others believe there’s nothing like a greasy burger to soak up the booze. Although hitting up the diner for unlimited coffee and fries may seem enticing, it’s only going to make your hangover worse, says Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency room physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.

“Acidic foods like OJ or caffeine promote gastric acid secretion, which lead to GI upset and nausea, and queasiness—what we refer to as ‘heartburn,'” he explains to MensHealth.com. Traditional hangover foods like pizza, burgers, or a bacon, egg and cheese bagel make your liver and pancreas work harder–which is the last thing they need after processing large quantities of alcohol.

So what should you eat? Simple, easily digestible foods, Glatter advises. Try these 10 hangover-friendly foods.

“Bananas are one of the best foods to eat after a hangover develops,” says Glatter. They’re easy to digest and loaded with potassium, which gets depleted after you drink heavily.

If you have an aversion to bananas, dates are a good hangover-friendly food since they’re high in potassium and sugar, says Glatter.

A greasy egg sandwich may be out, but you can eat a simple plate of eggs. They contain cysteine, which helps break down acetylaldehyde—a byproduct of alcohol metabolism that may contribute to headaches and nausea, says Glatter.

Glatter recommends oatmeal because it will boost B vitamin, calcium, and magnesium levels. Its smooth texture makes it easy to digest and it could help soothe upset stomaches.

Alcohol is a diuretic, and all those trips to the bathroom could lead to dehydration. That’s why it’s important to drink plenty of water to ensure you’re hydrated after consuming too much alcohol.

Anecdotally, people rave about using this children’s drink as a hangover cure. And according to Glatter, there might be something to it: the sugar could raise blood glucose levels, which is low after drinking too much alcohol.
