Four-time World’s Strongest Man Brian Shaw isn’t letting the coronavirus quarantine stop him from his training goals. (Although he’s also used the situation to have some fun for his fans… he deadlifted a car and did a toilet paper challenge with his wife.) He’s currently training to bench press a goal of 701 pounds, and he took us inside his home gym for his latest bench-centric workout. Just the sounds of clanking plates and Shaw’s efforts are making us nostalgic for gym lifts.

The strongman’s YouTube subscribers were leaving comments about having serious gym envy, too.

“Haven’t been to the gym since they shut them all this is like ASMR to me,” one wrote. And another commented, “Shaw Strength!!! I wish my gym was open. Turns out Brian was pretty smart building his own gym.”

But in the video, he gets right to it, eventually working up to 495 pounds. His plan for the day includes trying pause bench press, and drops a hint that he might try a powerlifting meet in the future.

“With this whole crazy road to 701, if I decide to do a powerlifting meet, I want to be prepared for pausing the bench,” he says.

Between bench presses, he does isometric hold bench work.

“Wow, I almost passed out. I started seeing the white lights,” he says after doing a hold of 336 pounds.

Then, he shifts focus for some dumbbell work to finish out his workout, and addresses the ways he’s shifted his training mindset during quarantine.

“This is a crazy time, and as I said before, having something new to focus on has very much helped me personally, mentally and physically. I’m excited about it,” he says. “I think I needed that change of gears because I was a little bit down about not being able to prep for World’s Strongest Man.” The competition was recently rescheduled from May to November due to the pandemic.

As he said, Shaw is still not going to let the time go to waste. “But, you adapt, you overcome, you change the pace a little bit and keep moving forward.”
