Cardiovascular diseases: High resting heart rate is dangerous

A high resting heart rate disease is a known risk factor for cardiovascular. A new Swedish long-term study in men between 50 and 60 years, confirmed this once again. The study also showed that even small changes in the resting heart rate and bring a higher risk to health: Every beat-per-Minute that comes in, it increases by up to three percent.

In comparison to men over the age of 50 years with less than 55 beats per Minute, men whose resting heart rate was greater than 75 beats per Minute had about twice the risk for deaths from cardiovascular disease or circulatory disorders of the coronary vessels (coronary heart disease).

In the case of those whose resting heart rate between 50 and 60 years of age remained stable, the probability of a cardiovascular disease by 44 percent lower than for participants with increasing resting heart rate. Each increase of one beat per Minute increased the risk for death of any kind of three percent, for cardiovascular diseases by one percent and for coronary heart disease by two percent.

The resting heart rate changes with age, but what would be the effects on the risk of cardiovascular events, was so far little studied. Therefore, changes of Resting heart rate in men over the age of 50, 60 and 71 years were considered in the current study in connection with the Occurrence of and deaths due to cardiovascular diseases. A change in the Resting heart rate by five or more beats per Minute than the increase or decrease was defined. Changes that were less than five beats per Minute, were evaluated as stable.
