High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. You could be at risk of hypertension if you develop any of these seven crucial symptoms.

High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It’s crucial that your hypertension is diagnosed as soon as possible.

While it may be difficult to know if you’re at risk of high blood pressure, you should consider speaking to a doctor if you develop severe chest pain.

Unexplained and sudden chest pain could be a sign of a deadly hypertensive crisis, warned the Mayo Clinic.

Some patients have also reported an unusually severe headache, as well as nausea and vomiting.

You may develop anxiety very suddenly, combined with a shortness of breath.

In the very worst cases, it could even lead to seizures or unresponsiveness.

A hypertensive crisis is when your blood pressure quickly rises to a lethal level.

Extremely high blood pressure can cause damage to your blood vessels and vital organs.

If you develop any of these key symptoms, and you know that you already have high blood pressure, you should seek medical helps straight away.

You may need hospital treatment if your blood pressure has risen too high.

“A hypertensive crisis is a severe increase in blood pressure that can lead to a stroke,” it said.

“Extremely high blood pressure — a top number of 180mmHg or higher or a bottom number of 120 mmHg or higher — can damage blood vessels.

“The blood vessels become inflamed and may leak fluid or blood.

“As a result, the heart may not be able to pump blood effectively.”

Signs of high blood pressure only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.

It’s crucial that people with hypertension identify the condition early, as it can lead to a number of deadly complications.

All adults over 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least once every five years.

You could lower your risk of high blood pressure by eating a healthy, balanced diet, and by doing regular exercise.
