Elle Macpherson Says This Healthy Habit Is Ruining Her Teeth

While juice cleanses are certainly a popular way to kick-start a new year, Elle Macpherson reckons you might wanna think twice if you’re downing the drink daily.

The supermodel recently took to her Instagram story to share a snap of herself in the dentist’s chair, getting her teeth cleaned. She captioned the post: “January promise to self: Floss!!! Ok so here’s the scoop. Because I juice a lot my teeth need cleaning more often to get juice stains off. Good to start the year fresh.”

All those juice-based dieters out there, take note!

On her wellness blog WelleCo, Elle says she starts each morning with hot lemon water, before moving on to a green juice. “On waking, I add ginger, mint and pinch of cayenne pepper to my usual hot lemon water,” she writes.

“An hour later, I take my two teaspoons of WelleCo SUPER ELIXIR Greens in 500ml of filtered water for firm, plump, hydrated skin.”

While nutrient-packed juices may seem like a good way to improve your gut health and clear your skin from the inside out, it seems this popular wellness trend could actually be wreaking some serious havoc on your pearly whites.

Juices (as well as other beverages like coffee and red wine) can stain your teeth over time, affecting the appearance of your smile. What’s more, acidic ingredients such as lemon and apple cider vinegar can erode tooth enamel (the outer layer of your teeth). And don’t forget that fruits have a high sugar content too.

So, what is a juice junkie to do? Well, moderation is key. However, if you’re not on board with parting from your daily juice or lemon water, you may want to book in for a few extra trips to the dentist à la Elle!
