Eczema treatment – the essential oil to relieve itchy and sore signs of eczema at home

Eczema is a long-term condition that causes the skin to become dry, itchy, red and cracked, according to the NHS. But, moisturising the affected skin with tea tree oil could help to get rid of the condition, it’s been claimed.

Young children are most at risk of developing eczema symptoms, but it could also develop in later life.

If you have eczema, your symptoms can vary between small patches of dry skin, to widespread, inflamed areas of cracked skin.

But you could lower your risk of dry skin by regularly moisturising with tea tree oil, it’s been revealed.

Tea tree oil has been used for over 100 years for its skin-healing properties.

The oil is derived from an Australian plant, and it’s been claimed to be an effective remedy for dandruff, athlete’s foot, and even acne.

But, more notably, its healing properties have been claimed to reduce the severity of eczema flare-ups.

Tea tree oil contains anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, according to medical website Healthline.

It reduces the itchiness of eczema, as well as skin irritation and the risk of infection, it added.

“If you want to use tea tree oil to treat your eczema, a high quality oil is crucial,” it said.

“High quality oils are less likely to be contaminated by other ingredients.

“If you can, opt for an organic oil. Make sure any oil you buy is 100 percent pure. Always research the brand to make sure it’s reputable.

“Once you’ve purchased the oil, store it in a cool, dark place to keep the oil intact. Exposure to light and air can alter the quality of the tea tree oil and increase its potency.”

But, you should never use tea tree oil on your skin without diluting it.

Without using a carrier oil, tea tree oil can have the opposite effect, and may end up drying out your skin.

Mix your tea tree oil with any common carrier oil, including olive oil, coconut oil or sunflower oil.

Use around 12 drops of carrier oil for every one or two drops of tea tree oil.
