All of us have visceral fat in our bodies. Unlike subcutaneous fat, it is stored deep inside the belly acting to protect and insulate your organs. Although this makes it necessary for our bodies to function, too much of it can be dangerous.
Storing an excessive amount of visceral fat in the body can result in a range of issues including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
Luckily, there are ways to lower this risk by reducing belly fat.
One such way to do this is by adding chillies into your diet.
Bio-chemistry scientist and founder of Lazy Scientist Sauces, Stephen Rushton, explained: “Capsaicin is the pain-inducing compound found in chillies and is an incredible molecule by all accounts.
“It sports a wide range of health benefits including anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, but most impressively it can also increase your metabolism, which boosts the rate at which you use energy and burn fat.
“This has a knock-on effect on vascular function and fatigue resistance, and thus exercise performance.
“It does this through activating a specific receptor channel on sensory neurons in the body and improving ATP production.
“Adenosine triphosphate or ATP is the source of energy for your cells, so more ATP means more energy, which equals more gains in the gym.
“Capsaicin can also enhance fat oxidation, the breaking down of fatty acids.”
Mr Rushton is working alongside fitness company Gymbox on their new Ring of Fire gym class, which combines exercise with eating hot sauce.
He recommended eating the fruits alongside working out for the best results.
“So, by adding capsaicin consumption to high intensity interval training – or heat intensity interval training as we call it – it can further increase the rate at which your body burns calories, making it an excellent training method to burn overall body fat, including belly fat,” he added.
The weight loss properties of capsaicin are also promoted by other health bodies.
WedMD, says: “Studies have found that capsaicin can increase your metabolism, which increases the rate at which you use energy and burn fat stores.
“It can also lower your appetite, which may help you eat less than you normally would.”
And a study, published in Bioscience Reports, says: “Capsaicin plays a critical role in human and has multiple benefits for metabolic health, especially for weight loss in obese individuals.”
It’s not possible to know how much visceral fat is hidden in the body without imaging tests.
But you can get a rough estimate by measuring your waist using the belly button as a marker.
For women 35 inches or more can signal too much visceral fat.
Whereas for men, the guide is 40 inches or more.
