Miracle baby: Mum appeals for more breast milk donations

The mother of a “miracle baby” has appealed to nursing mothers to donate breast milk to a special milk bank.

Mary Benson McMahon, from Killaloe, Co Clare, was born in University Maternity Hospital Limerick on February 16, 2016, at 24 weeks and weighing just 1.2lbs.

Her premature birth was due to the life-threatening and rare Eikenella bacteria which can cause neonatal sepsis. She is the youngest known survivor of Eikenella at this gestation.

Her parents, Thereze and Michael, experienced an emotional rollercoaster of highs and lows as Mary faced a “minute-by-minute” battle for survival.

Thereze appealed to mothers of full-term babies to donate any extra milk to the Western Trust Milk Bank in Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh. As Mary was so premature, Thereze had difficulty producing enough milk and she said it was a “huge relief” to get milk from the milk bank.

Mary is now a happy, healthy three-year-old.

Speaking to the ‘Clare Champion’, Thereze said: “No one thought Mary was going to survive… Mary is a miracle baby.”
