After six seasons on SNL, actor and funny man Jay Pharoah is probably best known for his top-notch impressions and jokes. But when it comes to his health and fitness, the comedian doesn’t play any games. For the latest installment of Gym & Fridge, Men’s Health met up with the 33-year-old at his Los Angeles home to discuss how he’s kept in shape amid quarantine.
His secret? Juice—and lots of it. Watermelon juice, ginger juice, grapefruit juice, and more. He makes his go-to drink by putting beets, apples, limes, and lemons into his trusty juicer. Pair that with a mostly protein and vegetable diet and he said he’s good to go for the day.
“It’s no secret that quarantine let everybody get a little bit loose,” he said. “I had a lot of fried food over the pandemic and gained some weight. Now, thanks to me for setting up my own gym system and to me juicing, I dropped 25 pounds.”
The former SNL star said it’s sometimes difficult to keep up with his diet when crazy filming schedules get in the way and food options are limited. He even admits he fell off the wagon while on set for his latest film, All My Life.
“I have a cheat day like every two weeks,” he said. “I’ll indulge, have a nice burger, and get some fries, but make sure that I get back on track afterwards. That’s a timeshare. Enjoy it while we’re here but we’re not going to stay here.”
Pharoah said he grew up being the “fat kid.” Now, he works out about five days a week and is constantly switching up his workout routine to help build muscle.
While working out at a home gym can get tough, the actor said he leans on his family and meditation to stay motivated and keep his mind fit. But when he needs a little extra push, he has another secret weapon: what he calls “warrior music.”
“When you come in my gym, you’re not going to hear Drake playing all the time,” he said. “No offense, I love Drake’s music, but when I come in here, I’m trying to be a warrior, so I listen to warrior music.”
Now that’s a playlist we’d love to hear.
