Margot Robbie Is 'Not a Fan of Lifting Weights', Here's How She Moves Her Body Instead

As a Hollywood star, she may have one of the most glamorous careers around – but even Margot Robbie can find it hard to wind-down her mind from the day-job sometimes. The Australian actress and producer, 30, admits finding it hard to nod off after a busy day on set.

Which is somewhat unsurprising, given that her biggest film credits include the action-packed Suicide Squad, super-tense I, Tonya, and ultra-thrilling Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood.

In Women’s Health UK’s May issue – out now – she confides: ‘I’ve always found it hard to switch off and go to sleep at the end of the day, especially if I’ve been working.’ But she has a refreshingly down-to-earth approach for promoting mental relaxation. ‘I make my bedroom as sleep-friendly as possible,’ she tells us.

‘I’ll put on a face mask, light some nice soothing scented candles and play relaxing music. And if I’ve had a particularly tough day, I’ll run a bath with lots of bubbles and enjoy a cold beer while I soak. Bliss.’ We agree.

And if Margot’s evening self-care is on point, so is her daytime nutrition. ‘Breakfast is usually porridge, and during the morning I’ll have an immunity-boosting smoothie,’ she explains, of how she keeps herself well-fuelled for a day in front of the camera. ‘I’ll normally have a chicken salad for lunch, and for dinner I’ll tuck into a tuna steak with sweet potato.’

Oh, and the Aussie loves a hydrating cuppa. ‘Throughout the day, I’ll sip on tea – I’ve been obsessed with it ever since I lived in the UK,’ she adds, of a habit instilled prior to her move from London to Los Angeles in 2013 – the year she made her big break in The Wolf Of Wall Street.

However, Margot isn’t your typical LA star. ‘Food is a big thing for me. I love burgers and fries, which I’ll order with a pint of beer. In the US, my favourite meal is a double truffle burger from the American chain Umami Burger: it comes with a truffle cheese fondue, truffle aioli and truffle glaze,’ she reveals, of how she likes to dine out.

‘But back when I called London home, I loved the Mexican restaurant and bar La Bodega Negra in Soho. Everything I ate there was amazing – and they whip up the best margarita I’ve ever had anywhere.’ Race you there after lockdown!

That said, Margot’s adopted a very LA fitness regime. ‘[I] really got into Pilates when I moved to LA [in 2013] and always feel a lot better after a good stretch,’ she says of her approach to exercise.

‘I found boxing sessions and fighting practice for Suicide Squad really fun, but quickly realised I wasn’t so much a fan of lifting weights. When I’m not preparing for a role, I prefer to do workouts I really like, such as dance classes or playing tennis with friends.’

Whether it’s skating like a pro in a biopic, or performing her own Harley Quinn stunts in a superhero blockbuster, it’s clear that Margot makes the most of every work opportunity. ‘When I got the chance to work with Quentin Tarantino [on 2019’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood] I was so excited,’ she says.

‘He is one of the all-time great directors – and I wrote him a letter telling him I’d love to be in one of his films. Once on set, I made sure I soaked up all the knowledge from him that I could. If you want something, ask for it – the worst people can say is no.’
