What is Rocklatan for?

Rocklatan is used to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma, and affects around 3 million Americans. It is caused by clogged drainage canals that normally lead fluid out of the eye, and results in high pressure inside the eye. The condition develops slowly and can go unnoticed for years, but it can ultimately lead to a loss of peripheral or side vision.

Ocular hypertension, on the other hand, is a risk factor for glaucoma.  With ocular hypertension, IOP is higher than normal, but it does not cause nerve damage or vision loss.

How does Rocklatan work?

Rocklatan is a combination of two drugs: Rhopressa (netarsudil) 0.02% and Xalatan (xalatan) 0.005%. These two ingredients work together to increase the outflow of fluid from the eye, leading to a decrease in intraocular pressure.

Patients are directed to apply one drop of Rocklatan in the affected eye(s) once-daily in the evening.

Does Rocklatan have any side effects?

Yes. Rocklatan may cause your eyelashes to grow, but this side effect is usually reversible if you stop using the medication. Rocklatan can also change the color of your eyes; this side effect is usually permanent.

Other common side effects include red eyes, eye discharge, discomfort, itching, administration site pain, and broken blood vessels in the eye.

How much will Rocklatan cost?

Unfortunately, Rocklatan may be expensive since it is a brand-only combination eye drop. At this time, the manufacturer has not released a cost-saving program.

Rocklatan will be available in the second quarter of 2019.
