Dick’s Sporting Goods Park vaccination site closes early after some suffer adverse reactions

A mass COVID-19 vaccination at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City was shut down Wednesday because of adverse reactions to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

“Following the administration of the J&J vaccine and during onsite observation, we saw a limited number of adverse reactions that equaled 0.8% of the people receiving the vaccine Wednesday,” said Kevin Massey, a spokesperson for Centura Health, in a statement.

Centura and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are host partners of the site.

“We followed our protocols and in an abundance of caution, made the decision — in partnership with the state — to pause operations for the remainder of the day,” Massey said.

More than 1,700 people received shots Wednesday at the site, and 640 people who were turned away are rescheduled for shots Sunday at the sports park.

Centura did not say how many people suffered reactions or what those reactions were.

Everyone who receives a COVID-19 vaccine is required to wait 15 minutes afterward to see if there are any adverse reactions.

“Our goal is to continue to vaccinate Coloradans as quickly as possible while keeping our patients’ safety at the forefront,” Massey said.
