Dr Rupy Aujla, who runs The Doctor’s Kitchen, worked with the UK and Ireland Mushroom Producers to discuss the health benefits of mushrooms. He detailed how a component in the veg can help fight inflammation.
He told Express.co.uk: “Mushrooms contain the same specific things you find in whole grains like oats, for example.
“If you look at the potential benefits of those, they support your gut and can have the impact of lowering inflammation.”
The health expert explained: “Inflammation is a universal concept that’s underlying a lot of ill health we see in Western society, things like cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, all those things are underpinned by inflammation.
“So, if you can increase your consumption of ingredients that lower inflammation or increase balanced inflammation, that’s going to serve you well.”
What is inflammation?
Inflammation is one of the ways the body responds to infection or injury. Inflammation helps to heal the body, but too much of it can cause other health conditions.
Inflammation can cause the likes of

- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Colitis and Crohn’s disease
It has also been linked to depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and MS.

- Fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and cherries
- Nuts
- Tomatoes
- Leafy green
- Fatty fish
- Olive oil
- Mushrooms
Foods that cause inflammation
- Processed meat
- Refined carbs
- Fizzy drinks
- Fried foods
Dr Rupy added: “Just to clarify, no foods can be attributed to specifically preventing a certain condition.
“It all sort of works holistically to conspire to prevent ill health.”
The health professional said: “I think one of the best ways of doing that is increasing your consumption of ingredients such as mushrooms.
“A plant-focused diet is something that can reduce your risk of a host of different conditions.”

Again, he said focusing on whole foods is the best way to boost health.
The best way to improve your gut health, Rupy said, is to eat a varied diet.
“Diversity in your diet is the best way to support your microbes,” he said.
