So THIS Is Why Abby Lee Miller From 'Dance Moms' Is In A Wheelchair
- Abby Lee Miller, 53, is in a wheelchair following a year-long cancer battle.
- The choreographer is hoping for a miracle that will allow her to walk again someday.
- For now, she’s in physical therapy and focusing on standing.
Abby Lee Miller is cancer-free and adjusting to life in remission after a year of spinal surgeries, treatments, and 10 rounds of chemotherapy.
The Dance Moms: Resurrection choreographer was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkins lymphoma that affects white blood cells, last April when she underwent emergency spinal surgery, Women’s Health previously reported.
According to a recent post—one of many candid photos Abby shared throughout her battle—Abby called out the emergency room doctors who she says didn’t do their jobs. After two stints in the ER, they didn’t make the link between her symptoms and her aggressive form of cancer. “Why didn’t somebody listen to me, the patient?” Abby wrote. She knew there was more to her symptoms, so she didn’t give up, “I finally found the right team that’s why I lived to tell my story.”

One year ago today ~ I underwent emergency surgery for an infection in my spine. This mass/tumor choking my spinal cord turned out to be Burkitt Lymphoma. I endured ten rounds of chemo therapy (each lasting 6 days with 4/ 24hr bags pumping poison into my body ending with a spinal tap in 3 spots, plus another shot of Chemo into my tailbone area up the spinal cord around my brain cavity) Ten times! Another spine surgery was needed & I have one more still to go. I struggled thru months of physical therapy to learn to sit up again, to crawl and maybe with a miracle someday I’ll walk. Why didn’t the ER Doctors on duty do their jobs?I came in twice with the same symptoms? Why didn’t somebody listen to me, the patient? I finally found the right team that’s why I lived to tell my story, I have a lot to say! Thank you to all wonderful top notch professionals who continue to help me heal. For those who missed it, misdiagnosed me, and the so calledFederal “Doctor” who took me off medication cold turkey and the other ER “Doctor Hollywood” who told me to go home and take it easy for 10 days – STOP practicing! Please 🙏🏻

These days, Abby is back at her Pittsburgh dance studio teaching from a wheelchair. She’s hoping to one day be able to walk again, but even getting to that point will require a ton of hard work from the star. “I struggled thru months of physical therapy to learn to sit up again, to crawl and maybe with a miracle someday I’ll walk,” she wrote on Instagram.
For now, Abby’s focusing on standing three times a day for just 20 minutes instead of putting too much pressure on one leg. “I can take a right step because I can put my weight on my left knee, then when I take a left step my right leg just crumbles because I need a knee replacement,” she told People.
Wheelchair or not, Abby’s not letting anything stop her. “I fought hard to be here,” she said in the season 8 trailer for Dance Moms which premieres on June 4, on Lifetime at 8 p.m.“You have to fight to be a champion.”
