Men who stay up late watching Netflix have less healthy sperm counts, study shows
Professor Hans Jakob Ingerslev, who co-authored the study, commented: “These were men who had been trying to have a baby for about two years and an early bedtime was likely to be important because it allowed them to get more sleep.
“The reasons could be psychological as sleep-deprived men suffer mores stress and that can have an impact on fertility.”
Following the results, experts have urged chaps to get more shut eye.
Dr Raj Mathur, a consultant gynaecologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, spoke about the study.
He said: “The study suggests men who are trying for a baby should be going to bed early and getting a decent amount of sleep.
“They should think about what is keeping them up and try to change their habits, whether it’s binge-watching Netflix or sending emails.”
While the study only tracked a small group of participants, wider research has been carried out in the past.
The NHS advises Brits to get eight hours of sleep a night if they want to “function properly”.
The website adds: “Difficulty conceiving a baby has been claimed as one of the effects of sleep deprivation, in both men and women.
“Apparently, regular sleep disruptions can cause trouble conceiving by reducing the secretion of reproductive hormones.”
