Keith Duffy health: Boyzone star shares ‘worst experience’ – how long will symptoms last?
Keith Duffy, 44, is best known for being part of the pop sensation Boyzone. The five Irish vocalists took the UK by storm in the second half of the 1990s, with 16 of their first 17 singles becoming Top Five hits and six topping the charts. Fans rejoiced when the boyband stars announced their global farewell tour last year. As the tour got underway earlier in the year, bandmate Keith Duffy’s itinerary was suddenly upended after experiencing a gruelling health condition.

The boyband star was rushed to World Medical Hospital in Bangkok after contracting a secondary bowel infection and viral infection.
He took to Instagram to reveal the shocking symptoms and pay tribute to the staff that looked after him: “72 hours of a fever of 38/40 degrees with diarrhoea and vomiting caused by contaminated food from bad hygiene in preparation!!
“The worst bad health experience of my life ! A secondary bowel infection and viral infection!
“These ladies our my saviour They are saints Thank you ladies I love you! You’ve Given me a whole new perspective of selflessness I will never forget! God bless you all and thank you again !”
Diarrhoea and vomiting are common symptoms of bowel and viral infections.
The symptoms are usually associated with a condition called viral gastroenteritis – an intestinal infection marked by watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes fever, explained Mayo Clinic.
The most common way to develop the condition is through contact with an infected person or by ingesting contaminated food or water.
“If you’re otherwise healthy, you’ll likely recover without complications,” said the health body.
How long symptoms last depends on the cause. “Viral gastroenteritis symptoms may appear within one to three days after you’re infected and can range from mild to severe.
“Symptoms usually last just a day or two, but occasionally they may persist as long as 10 days,” explained the health site.
After getting back on his feet, Duffy rejoined his bandmates in Australia for the next tour date.
Commenting on his condition, Boyzone chiefs posted on Instagram: “After three long days in hospital in Bangkok, Keith is back on his feet and will be flying to Adelaide today to join the Boyz for their show there on Tuesday night.
“Big love and thanks to all the wonderful staff that have looked after him and for all the messages of support that you guys have sent out to him.”
Keith was taken to the hospital after collapsing at Bangkok’s Thunder Dome arena. Sources at the Thai venue said Keith suffered a “violent attack of diarrhoea and vomiting”.
Bandmates Ronan, Mikey and Shane were forced to go on stage as a trio – and had to continue onto Australia and perform their Perth gig without Keith as he remained in hospital.
