A boy in India has had more than 500 ‘teeth’ removed from his mouth, according to reports.

The seven-year-old, named by local media only as Ravindranath, was taken to his nearest hospital with a swollen jaw.

Scans supposedly showed hundreds of masses on the lower, right side of his jaw, prompting doctors to opt for surgery.

Medics removed 526 denticles – abnormal teeth-like growths from Ravindranath’s mouth. They were all encased in a tumour.

The five-hour procedure was carried out by surgeons at Chennai’s Saveetha Dental College and Hospital.

‘We opened up the jaw after administering general anaesthesia and saw a sack inside it,’ said Dr Senthilnathan, who led the operation.

‘The sack, weighing about 200g, was carefully removed.’ The surgeon, whose first name is unknown, said the denticles were of different sizes.

Dr Pratibha Ramani, who was involved in the procedure, told The Times of India: ‘The teeth were in different sizes that varied between 0.1 mm to 15mm.

HOW DID THE BOY HAVE SO MANY ‘TEETH’?

The medics in Chennai removed 526 denticles – abnormal teeth-like growths from Ravindranath’s mouth. They were all encased in a tumour.

The doctors, who said the boy did not need any jaw reconstruction surgery, did not specify what kind of tumour Ravindranath had.

But a similar case in 2014, when a 17-year-old had 232 denticles removed, blamed it on compound composite odontoma.

These strange masses are made of tissues found in teeth, including enamel, dentin, pulp tissue and cementum.

‘They looked like pearls in an oyster. Even the smallest piece had a crown, root and an enamel coating like a tooth.’

According to local reports, Dr Ramani added: ‘We have never seen these many teeth in any one site.’ His original teeth were left alone.

The boy’s father, named only as Parbhu, told media Ravindranath’s jaw started to swell when he was three.

However, he claimed his son ‘could not sit still’ for tests at a local hospital, prompting them to leave and not return.
