Researchers have long sought to uncover the biological mechanisms underpinning the greying process. It is known that greying is the eventual outcome of a shortfall in melanocytes, which gives hair its pigment. The cause of this downfall, however, remains somewhat of a mystery. But some evidence suggests the process can be delayed, and in some cases reversed. According to Nataly Komova, fitness and nutritionist expert for Just CBD, one seed could tackle the root cause of greying and help hair retain its colour.
The greying process has associations with stress, among a score of other biological factors, notably ageing.
Some scientists argue that the probabilities of reversing grey hair are greater when action is taken swiftly after the first signs of colour loss.
The longer a person waits before acting, the harder it can be to restore melanocytes.
Some science points to sesame seeds as antidotes for greying, as they nourish the scalp with key nutrients that boost the activity of melanocytes.

According to Komova, black sesame seeds are considered one of the best anti-ageing foods.
“Sesame seeds have one of the highest oil content with a rich nutty flavour,” explained.
“[They] come in different varieties from black, brown to red and tan colours seeds. They all have a similar nutritional composition.”
Komova went on to explain that the black variety of sesame seeds are most beneficial for restoring hair colour because they contain exceptionally high amounts of antioxidants, among other key nutrients.
“Black sesame seeds nourish vitamins like calcium, magnesium, vitamin B1, copper, zinc, phosphorus, amino acids, dietary fibre and selenium,” she added.
“In addition, these nutritious seeds also contain natural antioxidants like sesamolin, sesamol, and sesamin.”
According to research, the antioxidants found in black sesame seeds help counter or neutralise the effects of free radicals that promote cell damage and cause signs of ageing.
Black sesame seeds have many nutritious benefits to the body. These seeds are popular due to their efficiency in promoting hair growth and hair colour.
Komova continued: “The antioxidants component in black sesame seeds provide hair nourishment, stimulate hair growth and nourish the scalp as they increase blood flow to the scalp area.”
“By doing this, black sesame seeds resolve the root course of grey hair, giving your hair new black colour.
“They also promote melanocyte activity – this increases the production of the melanin pigment responsible for giving the hair its black colour, reversing grey hair conditions.”
The seeds have a number of bioactive compounds that support their use for other age-related symptoms including loss of hearing, poor memory, and poor eyesight.
Research published in the Journal of Nutrition suggests that sesame infection could help post-menopausal women with hormone regulation.
Although the seeds deliver potent health benefits when consumed raw, there is a prevailing belief in Ayuverdic literature that the benefits of black sesame for grey hair are yielded when applying oil to the scalp.
It is worth mentioning, however, that the seed hull contains phytic acid, which could interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients.
According to Chinese science, soaking and roasting the seeds could greatly reduce concentrations of phytic acid and improve the overall digestibility of the seed.
