The Canadian singer has become one of the best-selling recording artists with smash hits like The Power of Love and My Heart Will Go On. Her lengthy career has led her to having an ongoing residency at the Resorts World Las Vegas venue, but despite excitement from fans the star has been unable to rehearse and has been forced to reschedule to early next year in order for her health to recover.
“I’m heartbroken by this,” Dion said. “My team and I have been working on our new show for the past eight months, and to not be able to open this November saddens me beyond words.”
The icon has been a staple in Las Vegas since 2003 when her show opened at Caesar’s Palace.
The show then went on to be the most successful concert residency of all time amassing £279 million over five years.
The star’s most recent statement went on to reveal that she is suffering from “severe and insistent muscle spasms which are preventing her from performing.
“My partners at Resorts World Las Vegas and AEG have been working around the clock to get this brand-new state-of-the-art theatre ready, and it’s absolutely beautiful.
“I feel so bad that I’m letting them down, and I’m especially sorry for disappointing all the fans who’ve been making their plans to come to Las Vegas.
“Now, I have to focus on getting better… I want to get through this as soon as I can.”
Resorts World in Vegas also released a statement supporting the star saying: “Nothing is more important than your wellbeing.”
MedicineNet states that spasms can affect many different types of muscles in the body including the feet, hands, arms, thighs, abdomen and around the rib cage.
Spasms of skeletal muscles are most common and are often brought on due to overuse, muscle fatigue and dehydration.
Symptoms of spasms
Spasms usually occur abruptly and can be short, sharp and painful. They are usually relieved by gently stretching the muscle.
However, in Celine’s case spasms have been persistent which can be caused by a trapped nerve – although the singer has not confirmed what exactly her diagnosis is.
Not all muscle spasms cause pain but can feel as though the muscle is jumping or moving around on its own. Some individuals will even be able to see muscle twitching.
Medical News Today explains that spasms can also lead to a whole muscle cramping up meaning it cannot move. This effect most commonly happens in the legs, and it can be quite painful.
The muscle may feel hard to the touch and while the cramping sensation tends to pass within several minutes or so, the muscle may continue to hurt for some time afterward.
Spasms can also be symptoms of a wider neurological condition that the person can experience alongside other symptoms.
These symptoms may include the following:
- Pain in the back, neck, or head
- Weakness in the muscles
- Skin numbness
- A pins-and-needles sensation
- A tremor
- Paralysis
- Poor coordination
- Slow movements
- Double vision
- Sleep problems.
One condition that causes uncontrolled muscle cramps or spasms is dystonia – a lifelong condition that also makes your body twist into unusual positions.
In order to relieve yourself of muscle spasms it is recommended to try the following:
- Stopping any activity that led to the cramp — running, for example
- Massaging the cramping muscle gently
- Stretching the cramping muscle gently
- Using a heating pad to relax tight muscles
- Applying an ice pack to soothe sore muscles.
In order to treat a trapped or pinched nerve in the spine, individuals have to take time to rest and take over-the-counter painkillers in order to curb symptoms.
