Apple cider vinegar has been used as a health tonic for thousands of years.
Research has shown it has many health benefits which include lowering blood sugar levels, decreasing insulin levels, improving metabolism and aiding in weight loss.
Some animal studies suggest that the acetic acid in apple cider vinegar may promote weight loss and could help with reducing fat storage, burning fat and suppressing the appetite.
In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, vinegar was investigated and showed that consumption could help one to feel fuller for longer.
A key attribute in weight loss.
In addition to its appetite-suppressing benefits, apple cider vinegar has also shown to slow the rate at which food leaves the stomach.
In a small study, taking apple cider vinegar with a starchy meal significantly slowed stomach emptying.
This led to increased feelings of fullness and lowered blood sugar.
The study noted: “The presence of acetic acid, given as vinegar, significantly reduced the postprandial glucose and insulin responses to a starchy meal.
“Fermented foods or food products with added organic acids should preferably be included in the diet in order to reduce glycaemia and insulin demand.”
Studies on how it helps one to lose weight and body fat
Results from one human study indicate that apple cider vinegar has impressive effects on weight and body fat.
In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, vinegar intake was analysed.
The study found that the main component of the vinegar, acetic acid, was found to suppress body fat accumulation.
Subjects in the study were randomly assigned to three groups of similar body weight, mass index and waist circumference.
A 12-week treatment investigated one group ingesting 15ml daily, another group ingesting 30ml and the other taking a placebo.
The study concluded that the body weight, BMI, visceral fat area, waist circumference and serum triglyceride levels were significantly lower in both vinegar intake groups than in the placebo group.
